Frequently Asked Questions
What is Viva Miami?
Viva Miami! is a day of mock auditions and a workshop for singers who want to improve their audition skills. Training in this program is designed to help students achieve better outcomes at competitions and auditions for undergraduate programs everywhere.
When is Viva Miami?
The Viva Miami! workshop will be help at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on Saturday, November 12, 2016. The welcome will begin at 9:30 am. Students and Faculty will take a lunch break at noon and the workshop will resume at 1pm, ending at 4 pm. At 4 pm an optional campus tour will be available for those interested students.
Why are audition skills important?
Each year the singers auditioning for admittance into music programs throughout the country increase in number and quality. Most students who appear for these auditions have basic technical skills and quality instruments. In many schools, however, money available for scholarships has dropped significantly in the past two years. Scholarship awards, already fiercely competitive, are now based much more on the level of musicianship and artistry, in addition to the raw vocal talent. Focusing on important audition techniques will prepare students to maximize their audition potential.
What types of skills will I learn at Viva Miami?
The workshop will begin with mock auditions. Each student will receive written comments on their performance of two pieces. After all students have sung, the work will begin. Our Miami faculty will instruct students in stage deportment, working with an accompanist, preparing music for an accompanist, professional dress and makeup, repertoire choices, and application preparation. These audition tips will enable the students to showcase his or her talents.
Is there a fee for Viva Miami?
Yes, $45 pays for the workshop, including a professional accompanist, a copy of the workshop packet materials, a light breakfast, a campus tour, and tickets to Grand Night: An American Christmas. Please make checks payable to Miami University and indicate Viva Miami! in the memo line.
What if I am a Senior in High School? Is it too late to do this workshop?
Absolutely not. At most schools, undergraduate auditions begin in December and run through mid-March. The timing for Viva Miami! could not be more perfect.
Can my parents or voice teacher attend Viva Miami?
Yes, we welcome others who would like to watch their student’s participation in the workshop, and we encourage them to take notes and ask questions.
