Gustav Holst's chamber opera Savitri is based on an poem from the Mahabharata, one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. Savitri is visited by Death who comes to claim the soul of her husband.  Savitri charms Death and tricks him into returning the life of her husband.  Holst's lyrical scores is set for two chamber quartets and a wordless female chorus to symbolize the bridge between the world of the living and the dead.  Savitri was the first English chamber opera to be composed since the end of the seventeenth century.

The Medium tells the story of the abusive Baba and her children. To support her family and her drinking habit, Baba deceives grieving parents by pretending to convene with their dead children. During a séance, she feels the cold hand of death clutch her throat.  She repents for her crime and vows to give up convening with the dead, but the dead continue to speak to her driving her to the brink of insanity and abuse. The evil unleashed in her séance  threatens to destroy Baba and her family in a tragedy of Greek proportions.  The Medium features some of Menotti's most haunting and memorable music written for the theater.
